One of the easiest ways to liven up any party is to have a face painting station. This sort of side event is always a smash hit with kids, but it can even be enjoyed by teens and adults as well. You can’t just go into painting on people’s faces blindly, however; it actually takes a bit of planning to pull off successfully. You’ll need to make sure you have the right materials and enough preparation for a wide variety of subject matters.

With all of that in mind, here’s a quick checklist of what you need for the best possible face painting party station:

1 – The Right Materials

First and foremost, it’s important to use the right type of paint. You can’t just pick up watercolors or acrylics from the regular arts and crafts section. Even something with the “nontoxic” label may not be appropriate. If you make the wrong choice, you could cause breakouts or use paint that won’t come off easily enough. You should also avoid anything with glitter unless the package indicates that it’s made of polyester and below .008 microns. Your best bet will be to find an FDA approved brand that’s made with face painting in mind; Snazaroo is a good example.

2 – Cleanliness

Make sure you’re able to keep your brushes sanitary. You should clean your brush every time you paint on a new face. You want to make sure you’re killing any germs and bacteria that may be getting onto the brush while also avoiding any materials such as rubbing alcohol that is too abrasive. Mild disinfectant wipes sold in the baby aisles of department retailers and grocery stores should work just fine.

3 – Subject Matter Preparation

The best face painting party station will be able to accommodate a wide variety of requests. With that in mind, try to keep your phone, laptop, or tablet somewhere nearby so you can quickly look up anything that may be asked of you. If you don’t have access to wireless internet, do some preparations beforehand and print up a variety of stock designs that your guests can choose from. If it works for tattoo parlors, it can work for you!

It’s important to consider the demographic you’re going to be painting for. Make sure to have a lot of generic designs in mind as well. You may be asked to paint anything from a flower to Batman and everything in between, so be prepared!
